Philosophy of Education
Our schools are for children and whatever decisions are made and whatever instruction is given shall be on the basis of what is best for boys and girls; the recognition and solution of the needs of our children must motivate our instruction.
Instruction shall be flexible in order to care for individual differences and to develop the full potential in every child.
All learning activities of our schools shall provide for the participation in the democratic process, and for the development of skills whereby the individual may be aware of his/her responsibilities as a productive member of a free society.
We recognize that the school district has only partial responsibility for the education and development of its students; that we must work with the individuals involved, their families, and other institutions that share this responsibility and we must be sensitive to their responsibilities and objectives.
Our schools must strive to foster a positive attitude toward the world of work; the schools must help the student to understand that any and all work that is a service to society has an inherent dignity. We also feel that all students graduating from Riverside High School shall be prepared for some form of continuing education or the world of work.
Our schools shall provide:
- The development and mastery of the fundamental skills.
- The development of an appetite for learning.
- The development of ideals and purposes common to our society.
- Adequate guidance in learning to think independently, to make decisions, to exercise self-control.
- Development of the ability to think logically, critically, and creatively.
- The ability of self-evaluation and self-direction.
- Adequate guidance in physical development, and an awareness of the need for proper health habits.
- Adequate emotional development.
- An awareness of similarities and differences of mankind, and a healthy respect for the customs and beliefs of other races and creeds.
- Development of an awareness and appreciation for the value and productive use of time.
- The development of responsibility and cooperative skills and attitudes.
- The development of an appreciation for the worth of individuals and the ability to function in a group.
- The development of performance skills to carry on aesthetic exploration in school and life in accord with the students’ interests and talents.
